Conceptual Design of Radial Turbomachinery

Development of Scalable Parametric Component Models

DLR Institute of Propulsion TechnologyCologne, Germanysince 07/2026in progress

Ongoing master's thesis at the DLR Institute of Propulsion Technology on the conceptual design of radial turbomachinery, developing scalable parametric models for radial compressor and turbine stages that integrate into existing engine preliminary-design tools for helicopter engines.

Conceptual design, made computable.

Helicopter engines are small, fast-spinning and unforgiving, radial compressor and turbine stages have to be right early in the design. The thesis develops models for exactly these stages and integrates them into DLR’s existing engine preliminary-design tools, so concept decisions can be evaluated thermodynamically from day one.
